The King of Blends Teki Latex and Digging in the Carts video game music historian Nick Dwyer have joined forces to bring you “TEKI AND NICK’S MIXTAPE QUEST ADVENTURE” (テキとニックのUミクステップクイエスト大冒険) a unique blend of golden era age video game soundtracks, hip hop acapellas and bass heavy dance music, with mixtape exclusives from some of underground music’s finest.

A video game music geek himself, Teki Latex first guested on Nick’s Diggin In The Carts podcast for RBMA in 2017. It went so well they played a live b2b at the Red Bull festival in Paris back in 2018, and now they’ve come together to bring you “TEKI AND NICK’S MIXTAPE QUEST ADVENTURE”, the next evolution of this partnership.

To create the mix, Nick went back to his vault of 200,000 video game OSTs to find the tracks that might work best in this setting. Teki then went to work finding the right acapellas and club tracks for it, and the result is the world’s first mixtape as side-scrolling adventure, recorded as a live mix.

Music from legendary games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Streets Of Rage and Pokemon Red & Blue meet accapellas from acts like Migos, Outkast and Ruff Ryders as well as tracks from Dizzee Rascal, DJ Lag and Butch in a mix that will satisfy fans of video game music as much as clubbers. Working its way throughout video game music history, “TEKI AND NICK’S MIXTAPE QUEST ADVENTURE” draws a link between many modern sounds in dance music and the video games that inspired them, with plenty of rare VGM cuts for even hardcore fans of the genre.

There’s a number of exclusive tracks on the mixtape. Hyperdub boss Kode9 remixes the Hisou Kihei XSerd opening, whilst labelmate Ikonika gives her take on the Final Stage from Sonic The Hedgehog. There’s a previously unheard Mumdance remix of the Actraiser soundtrack, made  in 2014, and Japanese experimental footworker Foodman reinterprets Final Fantasy VI. Well known vocalists have recorded for it including grime MC Jammz, Japanese avant-pop artist Suiyooubi Campanella and ShiShi Yamazaki, who sings over the iconic Dire Dire Docks from Super Mario 64.
